Meet the Artist
Marvin Turk born 1926, Cincinnati, Ohio, served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, graduated from the University of Southern California now lives and works in Israel having immigrated in 1981. Prior to that time he lived in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida where he pursued a successful business career, and at the same time studied at private Art Schools.
His years spent at Studio 225 in Florida under the direction of artist Virginia Seitz proved to be a salient point in his career as a painter. From 1970 onwards painting and exhibiting under her direction took him to progressive steps in reaching his goal of making art a full time occupation.
Turk started exhibiting his work in various invitational shows in the Palm Beaches in 1970 and continued to do so until he moved to Israel in 1981. He has been represented and shown in galleries in Israel and the United States. He had major one person shows in 1983, 1986, and 1989 in Israel. In 1993 he was invited to exhibit his work in a one person show at the Lighthouse Gallery in Tequesta, Florida where he introduced his new Kinetic Symbolism paintings. His work is in the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton Museum of Art, and in private collections world wide.
Deeply moved by his feelings of a sense of history, the ambience of Israel and the Mediterranean area, he concentrated on an exegesis of that part of the world working mainly in acrylic and mixed media. The output of his studio in Florida and later in Israel was dominated by impressionistic paintings of religious themes, landscapes, strong in color, and featuring an interplay of light. The ancient city of Tiberias in the Galilee became the theme for a successful exhibit at the Tova Osman Gallery in Tel Aviv.
Constant experimentation and seeking new ways to express himself, Turk's work took a fresh direction which he calls Kinetic Symbolism. This resulted from studying the movement of dancers and horses. The dance paintings capture the symbiosis between music and dance. In the case of horses the work shows the dynamism of muscular movement and the power of motion.
